Some UV air purifiers can produce trace amounts of ozone as a byproduct, but most modern residential units are specifically designed to minimize or eliminate ozone output. The type of UV bulb matters most here — different bulb technologies produce different amounts of ozone, and manufacturers have largely shifted toward low-ozone and ozone-free designs for home use.
Why ozone output varies by bulb type
Older UV-C bulbs, and those that emit light in a shorter wavelength range, are more likely to generate ozone as a side effect. Newer coated or filtered bulbs are built to block that shorter wavelength while still emitting the germicidal UV-C range that neutralizes bacteria and mold, which is why bulb quality and certification matter more than the general category of "UV purifier."
