A proper load calculation and an in-home assessment from a licensed technician is the only reliable way to match a system to your actual home instead of guessing.

What a technician actually looks at

• Square footage, ceiling height, and window placement
• Insulation quality and air sealing
• Whether usable ductwork already exists, or a ductless approach makes more sense
• Your fuel source options (gas, electric, heat pump)
• How the space is used — whole-house heating versus zoned rooms like additions or garages

This is called a Manual J load calculation, and it's the industry-standard way to size equipment. Skipping it is how homeowners end up with an oversized furnace that short-cycles or an undersized one that never quite keeps up.

Common system types

Homes with existing ductwork often stick with a gas furnace or a heat pump paired with the same ducts. Homes without ductwork, additions, or rooms that run hot or cold compared to the rest of the house are frequently better served by a ductless mini-split, which heats and cools by zone without any duct installation.
