How Does a Ductless Split System Work?

A ductless split system pairs an outdoor compressor with indoor units, no ducts required

An outdoor compressor/condenser unit connects through a small conduit to one or more indoor air-handling units mounted in individual rooms. Refrigerant flows between the outdoor and indoor units through that conduit, moving heat out of the room during cooling or into the room during heating — each indoor unit delivers conditioned air directly, without ductwork.

How the heat transfer works

Like any AC or heat pump, a mini-split works by moving heat rather than generating cold air. In cooling mode, refrigerant inside the indoor unit absorbs heat from room air, then carries it outside where the outdoor unit releases it. Systems with heat pump capability can reverse that cycle in winter, pulling heat from outdoor air and delivering it inside — useful in mild climates where a heat pump can handle most or all of the heating load.

Why "zoned" matters

• Each indoor unit has its own thermostat and can be set independently
• You can cool or heat only the rooms in use, rather than the whole house
• Multiple indoor units can connect to a single outdoor compressor (a multi-zone system)
• No ductwork means no duct leakage losses, which can account for a meaningful chunk of energy waste in a home with old or poorly sealed ducts

Where it makes the most sense

Mini-splits are a strong fit for additions, garages, converted spaces, or older homes that never had ductwork installed — anywhere running new ducts would be expensive or impractical.
