How noisy is a ductless mini split?

Indoor mini-split units typically run around 19-30 decibels, which is comparable to a quiet library or rustling leaves. That's noticeably quieter than a traditional window unit and quieter than most central systems, where you're often hearing air moving through ductwork and registers throughout the house.

Why mini-splits run so quiet

A big part of the noise from a central system comes from air being pushed through ducts and out registers, plus the sound of the blower itself. A mini-split's indoor unit sits directly in the room with a small, efficient fan and no ductwork to push air through, so there's less mechanical noise generated and no duct rattle or whoosh to add to it.

What about the outdoor unit?

• Outdoor condenser units run in the 50-60 decibel range, similar to a normal conversation
• That's quieter than most traditional central AC condensers, which often run louder
• Placement still matters — keep it away from bedroom windows or patios where sound will be more noticeable

Where noise levels can creep up

An indoor unit running on its highest fan speed will naturally be louder than one on low or auto. A unit that's dirty, poorly installed, or has a failing fan motor can also get noisier over time — if a mini-split that used to be whisper-quiet starts making noise, that's worth having checked rather than ignored.

How mini-splits compare to other options

Central AC systems can run quiet indoors too, but the compressor noise, duct rattle, and register whoosh add up in ways a ductless system simply doesn't produce.
