What is a MERV rating?
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, a scale from 1 to 20 that measures how well an air filter captures airborne particles. The higher the number, the smaller the particles a filter can trap — a MERV 8 filter catches dust and pollen, while a MERV 13 filter can capture much finer particles like smoke and some bacteria.
Why the number matters
A higher MERV rating generally means cleaner air, but it also means a denser filter that restricts airflow more. Most residential HVAC systems are designed around a specific MERV range, and jumping too high without checking your equipment's specs can force the blower to work harder, reduce efficiency, and shorten the system's lifespan.
Choosing the right MERV rating for your home
- MERV 1-4: minimal filtration, rarely used in homes
- MERV 5-8: standard residential filtration for dust and pollen
- MERV 9-12: better for allergy sufferers, still airflow-friendly for most systems
- MERV 13-16: hospital-grade filtration, only suitable for systems designed to handle it
