What is a thermostat?
A thermostat is the control device that monitors your home's indoor temperature and signals your HVAC system to heat or cool the space until it reaches your desired setting. It's essentially the communication link between you and your furnace or air conditioner — without it, your equipment would have no way of knowing when to turn on or off.
How a thermostat works
A thermostat continuously reads the current room temperature and compares it to the setpoint you've chosen. When the reading drifts far enough from that setpoint, it sends a signal to your HVAC system to start heating or cooling, then signals it to stop again once the target temperature is reached.
Why thermostat placement and accuracy matter
- A thermostat near a sunny window or air vent can read inaccurately, causing your system to run more than needed
- An outdated or miscalibrated thermostat can cause uneven temperatures throughout the home
- Upgrading to a more accurate or smart thermostat can improve comfort and reduce unnecessary run time
