What is an Air Handler?

An air handler is the indoor component of a split HVAC system that moves conditioned air through your home's ductwork. It typically houses the blower fan, the evaporator coil, an air filter, and in many systems, electric heating elements — working together with an outdoor condenser or heat pump to keep your home comfortable year-round.

What's Inside an Air Handler

While the outdoor unit handles heat exchange with the outside air, the air handler is doing the work inside your home:

• The blower fan pulls air through the return ducts and pushes it back out through the supply ducts
• The evaporator coil absorbs heat from indoor air during cooling mode
• The air filter traps dust, allergens, and debris before air recirculates through the home
• In heat pump systems, the air handler may also house backup electric heat strips for the coldest days

Air Handler vs. Furnace

Air handlers and furnaces are often confused because they occupy the same spot in a system, usually a closet, attic, or garage. The real difference is that a furnace generates heat by burning fuel or using electric resistance, while a standard air handler only circulates air that's been conditioned elsewhere — typically paired with a heat pump or a separate cooling-only system. Knowing which one you have matters when it's time for repairs, since the internal components and common failure points differ between the two.

Keeping It Running Well

Because the air handler is where the filter lives, it's also the component most affected by simple neglect — a clogged filter restricts airflow, forces the blower to work harder, and can eventually lead to a frozen evaporator coil.
